Self-referral Options at Independence

Self-referral Options at Independence

Independence Incorporated’s excellent services are available to individuals not associated with an insurance company!

People pay for hair stylists they like.  They pay for meals out, vacations, spa visits and numerous other non-necessities.  They pay for courses, legal and financial advice, professional car repairs and many other things that help them move ahead in life.

Why not take that attitude to dealing with work-life disruption associated with injury or disability?

Maybe you’ve been injured off the job so WCB is not available.  Maybe you have a child with a disability or health condition approaching adulthood who is nervous about making the leap to independence.  Maybe you are a person who lives with some challenges who is going to be a parent, or who wants to see how to make a new career possible.

Maybe your previous career was so demanding, or your workplace became so difficult, that you just need some time to breathe and consider your options with the guidance of a trained professional.

The services at Independence Incorporated can help in all of these situations.

With our expert guidance we can help you:

  1. Figure out how to get around any ongoing limitations that may affect work choices
  2. Understand the opportunities and resources that are available to help with life changes
  3. Talk with someone who is both a trained professional and someone who has “been there”
  4. Learn about benefits you may be entitled to and make applications for them.
  5. Get your “mojo” back, by finding what you love and developing a strategy for linking it and your work life into a satisfying blend.

The names of our services are things like Occupational Therapy and Rehabilitation and Return to Work consulting, as well as Financial Information Consulting and Professional Peer Support.  But at the heart our focus is to put wind under your wings, to foster your confidence and ability so that you can more easily move forward to the next phase.

Have a look at our website: www.indep.ca/services-we-provide, and then give us a call for a free 15 minute consultation.

Colin Mathieson Wins Gold!!

Posted by

Independence Incorporated is pretty excited to have a Canadian racing champion on staff!

Colin with his two gold medals around his neck.

That hardware looks really great!

Colin Mathieson just came back from Ottawa, where he won gold in the 100 and 200 meter races at the Canadian Track and Field Championships July 6-10, 2018.  We sat down with him to find out a little about his journey to this race.

This was Colin’s 24th Canadian Track and Field Championship meet.  In it, he competed against Canada’s best.  Scores from this meet will be part of determining who goes to World events such as the Paralympics.  With competitors such as Isaiah Christophe in the race, Colin says “I knew exactly who I had to beat”.

The weather has been hot all across Canada this summer, and Ottawa was no exception.  The race days were all in the 40 degree range, testing endurance.

This was Colin’s first race after a nearly 2 year gap.  Facing a serious health issue, he had to sit out last year, the first since 1994.  “It is weird to say but I was sort of fortunate to be so sick that I was too preoccupied to miss it!”

But once back on the track, muscle memory and training kicked in.  Colin started training again in January. “Once you are back on the track you know that if you just keep going, everything will work itself out”, he says reassuringly.  A positive that came from the experience of missing racing for so long was a recommitment to entering as many races as possible.  Trips to year-round tracks are in the offing.

“The thing to remember is that for every race, you are up against people who have nearly the same equipment and nearly the same training.  With everyone having the same equipment, it comes down to who can put their best race together mentally and physically on that particular day, with the conditions that you are all facing.”

From the meet, Colin earned three sponsors – Cranked Energy Bars, Jackson Springs Water, and K2B Clothing Company.  Others are in negotiation.

He has his eyes on Dubai for the World Championships in 2019.  Independence Incorporated will definitely be cheering him on.
